Guisborough - North Riding

Northgate

D Company of the 4th Territorial Force Battalion Alexandra, Princess of Wales’s Own (Yorkshire Regiment)
1st Volunteer Battalion Alexandra Princess of Wales’s Own (Yorkshire Regiment) K Company – Northgate (Kelly, 1893, lists Fountain street)
1st North Riding of Yorkshire Royal Garrison Artillery (Volunteers) No 4 Battery

Kelly’s 1913 directory tells us that, ‘The Theatre Royal, situated in Northgate, is now used as an Armoury, Drill Hall and club room for the D Company of the 4th Territorial Force Battalion Alexandra, Princess of Wales’s Own (Yorkshire Regiment).’

‘The Theatre Royal, also used as an Armoury Drill Hall and club room for K. Company 1st V.B. is in connection with, and at the rear of the Chaloner Arms hotel in Northgate. The building is of plain brick and will hold over 600.’ (Kelly, 19)

A report in the Evening Gazette, 2003, reports that the old drill hall is to be sold for housing. We would welcome clarification about which drill hall is meant. The Ministry of Defence Strategic Defence Review 2003 lists Guisborough among its properties which had been sold.

We have seen an advertisement for apartments within ‘the Drill Hall development’ at Park Lane, Guisborough, which suggests that a conversion has taken place. We would welcome further information.
