Headquarters, Elite Drill Hall, Gratwicke rd; Instructor, Sergt.-Major A. A. Brown, R.H.A., Thorold
House, Teville road.'
In a description of Gratwicke road, the drill hall lay between premises numbered 40 and 44, although
the space was also occupied by the Elite Amusements Co. and Gratwicke Mews. The
caretaker lived close by. Kelly, 1899, lists 'Sutton, Sergeant Oliver, drill instructor to 2nd Volunteer
Battalion (Royal Sussex Regt.), 36 Gratwicke road.'
The premises in Teville road are variously listed as 'Instructor, Sergt.-Major A. A. Brown, R.H.A.,
Thorold House'; 'Sutton, Sergt. O., drill instructor to H Co., 24 Teville road' (Kelly 1905); 'Orderly
Room 34 Teville road (Kelly 1905); and 'head quarters, Teville Road (Kelly 1911).
Long's Directory of Worthing, 1892, records the opening of 'H' Company's Drill Hall, 20th July, 1886,
and lists the 'Head Quarters 2nd Volunteer Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment, Drill Hall and
Gymnasium, Bath place…"H" Company'. Subsequently, Kelly, 1891 refers to 'orderly room & drill hall,
Bath place' and Kelly, 1911 further defines the address as 112 Bath place.
Worthing was also the headquarters of the Sussex & Kent Volunteer Infantry Brigade, listed in Kelly,
1905 at St. Elmo, Worthing.
