Ore

Grove road

'H Co. 5th (Cinque Ports) Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment, Grove road.' (Kelly, 1911)

On 15th March, 1862, the Hastings Chronicle reported that a new drill shed was opened at Ore, on the junction of the Rye and Guestling roads, next to Becks Mill. This does not appear to be the same drill hall which Kelly recorded in 1911, because another was designed in 1896.

East Sussex Record Office holds plans dated 14th July, 1896, for the Rifle drill hall, Grove Road, Ore for the Ore Rifle Volunteers, by A W Jeffery, 5 Havelock Road, Hastings, architect - ref. dhcb/DH/C/11/55.

We have been informed that the drill hall is extant and in use by a timber merchant. Our informant says that some original features are still there. (2007)

For the information about current status, we are very grateful to a contributor who prefers to be anonymous and to the timber merchant for allowing him to look round the premises.
