Drill Hall, Portman Rd:

K12 ‘4th Battalion Suffolk Regiment; head quarters [plus A, B, C & D companies], Friars Bridge road.’ (Kelly, 1912)

This location causes much confusion. The drill hall stood on the corner of Portman Road and Friarsbridge Road, but was listed at the latter in the 1991 Ipswich Street Directory and Kelly’s 1912 Directory of Suffolk. However, it was listed at Portman Road in 1900, where the companies included HQ, A,B,C,D and H, and the cyclists of the 1st Volunteer (later 4th) Battalion, Suffolk Regiment.

According to nostalgia online, this drill hall has apparently been demolished. The site was used for a builder’s depot while the North Stand was built for the nearby football club.

According to The Times, Monday May 15th 1911, Lord Haldane [was] speaking at the opening of the Territorial Drill Hall at Ipswich on Saturday.

The Drill Hall on Woodbridge road, Ipswich, is extant and is now the Ipswich Caribbean Association International Community Centre. (2007)
