Kelly, 1891, lists H Company 4th Nottinghamshire Volunteer Battalion at King street. There is no immediately obvious military building here.

The drill hall on Newark road is marked on the Ordnance Survey map of 1921 and a photograph of 1914 shows officers of C Company 4th Battalion Volunteer Regiment formally posed on the land captioned to be 'opposite the drill hall on Newark road'. This drill hall is currently in use by the Nottinghamshire Army Cadet Force (2006). Although it seems to have been altered during its history, the styles of the older window framing and the porch suggest that this is the original building.
