‘The 6th Territorial Force Battalion Essex Regiment have their head quarters at the Cedars, Portway, with over four acres of ground attached, on which a spacious drill hall has been built; the building and drill hall has been reconstructed, and contains officers’ mess, sergeants’ mess, social rooms for the men, three billiard rooms, miniature range and underground range where the service rifle may be fired; a supper room is under construction. The Cedars, formerly known as “Upton Lane House”, abuts on West Ham Park.’ (Kelly, 1914)
