Described in Kelly, 1914, the Market hall, 'rebuilt in 1849 and now (1914) the property of Mrs. Gibson, is used as a court house, and as a drill hall for the Territorial Force.'
'The F Company of the 6th Battalion Devonshire Regiment Territorial Force was formed here in 1900' and 'the strength of the Company is 25 at Chulmleigh, 19 at Winkleigh, 13 at Kingsnympton, 10 at Burrington and 45 at Crediton.'
