There was a Volunteer presence here in 1888. Kelly, 1888, notes, ‘Here is a Volunteer Engineer Corps, consisting of No. 8 company, 2nd West Riding of Yorkshire, and numbering about 100 men, with headquarters at Leeds – their drill hall is in Nelson street.’

We understand that this drill hall was demolished some time ago and its footprint is now occupied by a bank.
