Caterham

Godstone Road

I Company of 1st Battalion of Surrey Volunteers (The Queen's) Royal West Surrey Regiment
4th Battalion, The Queen’s (Royal West Surrey Regiment) (E Co.)

Kelly, 1913, lists this unit at the Public hall, Caterham Valley.

This drill hall is on the Godstone Road in Caterham, near the junction with Tupwood Lane.

According to ‘Village Histories, 2: Caterham’ by the Bourne Society (1997), and ‘Bygone Caterham’, Jean Tooke (1988), this drill hall was built in 1886. It started life as a public hall for a variety of community uses and was bought by the War Office in 1913 for use as a drill hall, though the community continued to use it for social events. It eventually became the Caterham Youth and Community Centre in 1965.

The building is derelict now (2007) but signage shows its use as a youth centre.

We are very grateful to Neil Mackenzie for providing information about Caterham Drill Hall.
