Kelly, 1914: ‘The Butter Market is used for public meetings and entertainments, and as a drill hall by the territorials’, who were listed as ‘4th (Cumberland & Westmorland) Battalion Border Regiment (Detachment of E Company) who were ‘now [1914] 140 strong’ at the ‘Drill hall, Boroughgate.’ The listing in 1910 gave a strength of 44.
